If you know me, you know that I prefer to be in control at all times. This doesn’t mean that I boss everyone around and it’s my way or the highway. It just means that I like to know what I am getting myself into. When going to a restaurant, I like to know what’s on the menu – I will pick my order before I get there so I won’t feel rushed to figure it out when we are seated. I also like to figure out which shops we are going to before we head to the mall. I don’t like to be surprised and I have a hard time trying new/unfamiliar things. This is something that I am working on.
At the end of 2017 I thought a lot about what I wanted to accomplish throughout the new year. I read somewhere (I think it was TallBlondeBell on Instagram) about how instead of listing things that she would like to accomplish the upcoming year, she picked a word to focus on that year. I adopted this way of thinking and chose “Adventure” to be my 2018 word. Every time I am faced with a new opportunity, I remember that this is the year of adventure. This mindset has lead me to trying a ton of new things this year that I otherwise probably wouldn’t have. This includes going to hockey games, several museums, enjoying dinner at new locations, visiting shops in local communities, vacationing to Maine, canning foods, NYC trips, going to a shooting range, starting a blog, and many more. This year has taught me a lot about trying new things and that sometimes the best things in life are our of our control.
I challenge you to do something new today. Whether that means you take a different route to work, use your left hand for something, cook something new for dinner, or anything else you desire, you are on your way to losing control and gaining adventure in your life.
