Let’s be honest, it’s hard to keep up with cleaning the house. Sometimes life gets the best of us. Dishes will sit out longer than they should and the piles of dirty laundry will grow. If you are trying to get yourself on a clean-streak, these are the places that you need to focus on.
I’ve done a lot of research over the past months in the attempt to find the “secret of keeping your home clean.” I figured there had to be some sort of secret and magical trick that allowed people to work, have a social life, relax, and keep their house clean all at the same time.
Unfortunately, there is not (that I know of).
The best tip that I could give you is to do a little bit of cleaning every day instead of waiting until your day off to clean everything. Start by keeping up with your laundry and dishes. These are things that will accumulate daily and if you don’t keep up with them, you will never get ahead of the mess.
Clean your dishes every day. Either clean them after you dirty them or do the whole day’s dishes in the evening. And when you are done cleaning them, put them away. Don’t leave them drying on the counter over night. Sure they will be there tomorrow, but so will the newly dirtied dishes. If you can focus on cleaning your dishes every day for three weeks, it will become a habit and you are one step closer to having real days off that don’t consist of eight hours of cleaning. Not to mention, the dishes won’t have dried-on food particles that will hold on for dear life and require scrubbing until your arm almost falls off. Do yourself a favor, turn on your favorite music and take the time to do the dishes every day. If you have a significant other, have one person wash dishes and the other one dry them. You will be done in no time.
Now laundry is another story. I am notorious for washing and then needing to rewash clothing because I forgot they were in the washer. There are a couple ways that you can tackle this chore reasonably. Either you can pick one day out of the week and do all of the laundry or you can pick a few days throughout the week to do a load or two per night. It’s completely up to you and what works for your family. Just remember that whatever you wash will need to be put away. I am also guilty of having bins of clean clothes lying around that we would need to scavenge through. Doing a load every night (or every couple nights depending on the quantity of clothing) can be more manageable to put away than everything at once. However you decide to manage this, be diligent for three weeks and it will become a routine.
I challenge you to focus on routinely doing these two chores for the upcoming weeks. Make these tasks priority because once you have a handle on the laundry and dishes, the rest is more manageable. If you forget the dishes one night, it’s okay, pick back up tomorrow and do the two days worth. Just do your best to be diligent and never have to stand there with water-logged hands from washing dishes for an hour or more. Guilty again.
We are in this together.
